Set times, support names, room fit, and sound matter more than a flashy poster. Across Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, and the Eastern Cape, artists and producers have spent years bending, mutating, and rebuilding club music on their own terms. Gqom was born in the local scene of Durban and eventually traveled around the world.
Amapiano also became a global phenomenon, while its darker and more experimental mutations continue to develop away from the mainstream. It is this restless ecosystem that Mzansi Bass, curated by London based creative Shannen SP, seeks to document.
The underground side is crowded, but nights with real intent still pull. The compilation is the first release in TraTraTrax’s new Sampler series, and rather than attempting to define a new genre, Mzansi Bass is experimental, collaborative, deeply local, and connected to the wider world. Its title provides the project’s simplest explanation.

Bass crowds forgive a rough edge before they forgive something watered down. A rave (from the verb: to rave ) is a dance party at a warehouse, club, or other public or private venue, typically featuring performances by DJs playing electronic dance music.
The style is most associated with the early 1990s dance music scene when DJs played at illegal events in musical styles dominated by electronic dance music from a wide range of sub-genres, including acid house, techno, [ 1 ] house, [ 1 ] jungle, breakbeat, hardcore, happy hardcore, trance, trap and alternative dance.
What happens next depends on what the underlying dynamics actually support. The next few months should tell us a lot.
Occasionally live musicians have been known to perform at raves, in addition to other types of performance artists such as go-go dancers and fire dancers. The music is amplified with a large, powerful sound reinforcement system, typically with large subwoofers to produce a deep bass sound.
The music is often accompanied by laser light shows, projected coloured images, visual effects and fog machines. Fuelled by the emerging dance scene, and spearheaded by acid house music and underground bands such as The Prodigy, many of the “acid house” parties were held in squats during the late 1980s.
